Chauncey Wendell Bailey, Jr. Scholarship: DEADLINE JUNE 15, 2010

Chauncey Wendell Bailey Jr. served as editor-in-chief of the five San Francisco Bay Area Post newspapers from June 2007 until his murder on August 2, 2007. His 37-year career in journalism included lengthy periods as a reporter at the Detroit News and the Oakland Tribune. Bailey immersed himself in the Oakland community, mentoring youth interested in journalism careers.

Eligibility
Students must be enrolled in a Bay Area college or university. Students attending college out of state must have graduated from a Bay Area high school. Applicants must be studying one of the following journalism fields: television, radio, print or multimedia.

Award

$2,500 non-renewable award open to television, radio, print and multimedia students.



Luci S. Williams Houston Memorial Scholarship: DEADLINE JUNE 15, 2010

Luci S. Williams Houston’s passion was to affirm life, in all its glory, in photographs. She began her newspaper career with African American newspapers in Washington, D.C. Murdered in 2001 at age 43, Houston spent 8 years documenting the Bay Area as a photojournalist with the San Jose Mercury News. She was drawn to assignments that allowed her to build a sense of community, one image at a time.

Eligibility
Students must be enrolled in a Bay Area college or university. Students attending college out of state must have graduated from a Bay Area high school. Applicants must be studying photojournalism in one of the following journalism fields: television, radio, print or multimedia.

Award
$2,500 non-renewable award open to television, radio, print and multimedia photojournalism students (only) .

Along with application, students are required to submit three (3) copies each of the following:
• Completed application
• Official transcript
• Sample of work (2-3 each)
• Resume
• Three (3) letters of recommendation (from faculty, employer or journalist familiar with your work)
• Three Letters of Recommendation
• A 500 to 1,000 word essay answering the question, “What will you do to impact your community as a journalist?”

Timeline
June 15, 2010 - Application deadline
June 30, 2010 - Scholarship Committee will select 2010 recipients
July 15, 2010 - Recipients will be notified
Oct. 2, 2010 - Recipients will be recognized, awards presented

Recipients will be recognized and awarded on Oct. 2, 2010, at the Bay Area Black Journalists Association Young Journalists Scholarship Gala at Scott's Seafood Restaurant in Oakland's Jack London Square.
